Insight Exchange

Insight Exchange is a participatory activity designed to collect qualitative information through a dynamic question-and-answer process between participants. Each person takes on the role of both interviewer and interviewee, enabling a rich exchange of perspectives, experiences, and ideas on a specific topic.

Preparation

  1. Define the purpose:
    • Identify the objective of the activity: Exploring personal experiences, generating ideas, or deepening perceptions on a topic?
  2. Prepare guiding questions:
    • Create a set of open-ended questions related to the topic. Examples:
      • What does this topic mean to you?
      • What personal experiences can you share about this?
      • What solutions or ideas would you propose?
  3. Prepare materials:
    • Question cards (either pre-written or blank for participants to create their own).
    • Optional: Note-taking sheets, audio recorders (with consent).
  4. Organize the space:
    • For in-person sessions, arrange chairs in pairs or small groups.
    • For virtual sessions, use breakout rooms in platforms like Zoom to facilitate interaction.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Introduce the purpose
    • Explain that the activity aims to explore perspectives and share experiences through mutual interviews.
    • Present the guiding questions and establish rules for respect and confidentiality.
  2. Pair formation
    • Randomly assign participants into pairs or use criteria related to the topic.
    • Explain that each person will take turns being the interviewer and interviewee.
  3. Start the interviews
    • Provide a limited time (e.g., 5-10 minutes per turn) for one person to ask questions while the other responds.
    • Encourage brief note-taking if needed.
  4. Pair rotation (optional)
    • After each round, participants switch partners to interview or be interviewed by someone new.
  5. Group discussion and analysis
    • Bring the full group together to reflect on the interviews:
      • What did they learn from others’ responses?
      • What common themes or ideas emerged?
      • What additional insights do they have on the topic?
  6. Closing and synthesis
    • Summarize key takeaways and thank participants for sharing their experiences and perspectives.
Recommendations
  • Promote respect: Remind participants to listen actively and respect others’ opinions.
  • Facilitate responses: Provide clear, open-ended questions that encourage reflection.
  • Document findings: Take notes or record interviews (with permission) to support later analysis.
  • Adapt to the context: Customize questions based on the objectives of the activity.
